How to build a website with AI, step by step

How to build a website with AI, step by step

A practical walkthrough from brief to launch: prompts, structure, copy editing, images, forms and the checks to run before you go live.

Building a website with AI is not one action, it is five. Most people do the second step, skip the other four, and wonder why the site never produces enquiries. Here is the process we run on every build, in order.

Step 1: write a brief the model can use

The single biggest quality lever is the brief. A one-line prompt gets one-line thinking. Before you open any tool, write down six things:

  • What you sell, in the words a customer would use.
  • The towns and postcodes you actually serve.
  • The three questions every customer asks before booking.
  • Your prices, or the reason you do not publish them.
  • Two competitors you would like to outrank.
  • The one action you want a visitor to take.

Feed that in and the output changes character immediately. It stops being a generic template and starts being a draft about your business.

Step 2: lock the structure before the copy

Ask the model for a sitemap first, not a website. For a local service business the structure that consistently performs is: a home page targeting your main service plus your main town, one page per major service, an about page carrying trust signals, a contact page, and a blog for the long-tail questions.

Reject the temptation to add pages you cannot fill. Five strong pages beat twelve thin ones every time, both for readers and for search.

Step 3: generate and then ruthlessly edit

Generate section by section rather than whole pages. Ask for two variants of each headline. Then edit with three rules:

  1. Delete anything that could appear on a competitor's site. "Committed to excellence" applies to everyone, so it says nothing.
  2. Replace adjectives with facts. "Fast response" becomes "We answer calls within one ring during working hours and attend most Coulsdon jobs the same day."
  3. Read it aloud. If you would not say it to a customer standing in front of you, rewrite it.

Expect to cut roughly forty percent of the generated word count. Shorter pages convert better anyway.

Step 4: images, speed and accessibility

AI builders love enormous hero images. Export at the size you actually display, convert to WebP or AVIF, and add width and height attributes so the layout does not jump while loading. Add loading="lazy" to everything below the fold.

Write real alt text describing the image content, not the keyword you want to rank for. Check colour contrast, make sure every form field has a visible label, and confirm you can reach every link with the Tab key.

Step 5: forms, tracking and going live

Test the contact form from a phone on mobile data, not just from your desk. Add a honeypot field and a simple rate limit rather than a CAPTCHA that costs you conversions. Confirm the notification actually arrives, and set up a fallback delivery route in case the primary one fails.

Before launch: connect Google Search Console, submit the sitemap, install analytics, set canonical URLs, and check the site on a real mid-range Android phone. After launch, watch Search Console for the first four weeks and fix anything it flags.

Follow all five steps and AI has genuinely saved you weeks. Follow only step three and you have generated a document, not a website.

Frequently asked questions

A focused single-page site takes a few hours of work spread over two or three days. A five-page site with proper editing and SEO takes about a week. The AI part is minutes; the editing is the time.

Give the model a role, an audience, a location, a tone, a word count and a banned-phrases list. Vague prompts produce vague copy. Always ask for UK English and specify that it must not invent facts.

No for hosted builders. If you want an owned, exportable site you will need either basic HTML knowledge or someone to handle the build and hosting for you.
