AI website SEO basics every UK business needs

Titles, meta descriptions, headings, internal links, schema and local signals: the SEO groundwork AI builders usually leave undone.
AI builders give you a working website. They rarely give you a findable one. These are the SEO fundamentals to put in place before you spend anything on advertising.
Titles and meta descriptions
Every page needs a unique title tag under about 60 characters, leading with the search term rather than your brand name. "Emergency Plumber Maidstone | 24hr Callout | Smith & Sons" works. "Home | Smith & Sons" does not.
Meta descriptions do not directly affect ranking, but they heavily affect click-through from the results page, which does. Write under 155 characters, include the search term, and end with a reason to click: a price, a timescale or a guarantee.
Headings and page structure
- Exactly one H1 per page, describing the page, not the business.
- H2s for each main section, phrased as the questions people actually ask.
- H3s only nested inside an H2, never used purely to make text smaller.
- Short paragraphs, two to four sentences, with lists where lists make sense.
Many AI templates apply heading tags for visual size, which produces four H1s on a page and a structure search engines cannot read. Check the generated markup, not just the rendered page.
Local SEO signals
For a business serving Kent, Surrey or Greater London, local signals matter more than anything else on this page.
- Name, address and phone number in the footer of every page, identical everywhere.
- A Google Business Profile, fully completed, with photographs and posts.
- Town names used naturally in body copy where they are genuinely relevant.
- A genuine page per major service area, each with unique content, not a template with the town swapped.
- Consistent citations on UK directories.
- Reviews, requested consistently and answered publicly.
Structured data
Structured data is machine-readable JSON describing your business. At minimum add LocalBusiness with your address, telephone, opening hours and area served. Add BreadcrumbList on inner pages, FAQPage where you have genuine FAQs, and Article on blog posts.
Never mark up content that is not visible on the page, and never use FAQ markup for questions you invented purely to gain space in the results.
Internal links and content depth
AI-generated sites are usually a set of islands: the navigation links to each page and nothing else does. Add contextual links inside the body copy, using descriptive anchor text. Every service page should link to the contact page and to two related services.
On depth: a service page under 300 words rarely ranks for anything competitive. Aim for 600-900 words that genuinely answer what it costs, how long it takes, what is included and what happens next.
How to measure progress
Connect Google Search Console on day one and check three things monthly: which queries you appear for, your average position for your main terms, and which pages get zero impressions. Pages with zero impressions after eight weeks either target the wrong term or are too thin.
Ignore vanity traffic. For a local business the only numbers that matter are calls, form submissions and direction requests.
Frequently asked questions
No. Google penalises unhelpful content regardless of how it was produced. Its guidance focuses on experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust, not on authorship tooling.
One primary term plus two or three close variants. A page that tries to target eight terms usually ranks for none of them.
If you serve a local area and want to capture question-based searches, yes. Ten genuinely useful articles will outperform fifty thin ones.
