How to edit AI-generated website content

A repeatable editing method that turns bland AI copy into text that sounds like your business and converts visitors into enquiries.

An AI draft is not bad writing. It is average writing, which on a website is worse, because average is invisible. Here is the editing method we use on every build to turn a generated draft into copy that sounds like a real business.

Why AI copy reads flat

Language models predict the most likely next word. Averaged across the whole internet, the most likely words are the safest ones, so you get "committed to excellence", "tailored solutions" and "your trusted partner". Every one of those phrases is true of every competitor, so each one is a wasted sentence.

The second problem is hedging. Models avoid commitment: "we aim to respond promptly" rather than "we answer the phone within one ring". Vague promises do not convert.

The four-pass editing method

Do not try to fix everything at once. Four quick passes beat one slow one.

  1. Cut pass. Delete every sentence that could appear on a competitor's site. Do not replace anything yet. Expect to lose 30-50% of the words.
  2. Fact pass. Highlight every claim, number, qualification and guarantee. Confirm each one or delete it. This is non-negotiable.
  3. Specificity pass. Turn each surviving generality into a concrete detail: a town, a timescale, a price, a named process step.
  4. Voice pass. Read the whole thing aloud and fix anything you would never say to a customer.

Finding your actual voice

The fastest way to find your voice is to look at your own sent emails. How do you explain your service to a new customer in an email? That is your voice, and it is almost always warmer, shorter and more direct than the AI draft.

Adding proof and specifics

AI cannot invent your evidence, so this pass is entirely manual and it is the one that changes conversion rates. Add at least four of the following to any service page:

  • A real customer quote with a first name and a town.
  • A photograph of actual work rather than stock.
  • A number: jobs completed, years trading, response time.
  • A price or a price range, even if it is "from".
  • An accreditation or membership, with the registration number.
  • A named person with a face, so the business is not anonymous.

A reusable editing checklist

  1. Does the first sentence say what you do and where?
  2. Is there a specific number or fact in the first paragraph?
  3. Have all hedging words been removed?
  4. Is every claim verifiable?
  5. Does every page end with one clear next step?
  6. Is the reading age around 12-14, not academic?
  7. Is it written in UK English with UK spellings and date formats?
  8. Would a competitor be able to use this text unchanged? If yes, rewrite.

Run that checklist over every page and the AI origin of the draft becomes irrelevant. What is left is your business, described accurately, in your words.

Frequently asked questions

On a typical draft we keep about half the structure and a quarter of the sentences. Cutting is the main activity, not rewriting.

Substantially. Editing is what turns duplicate, generic text into something specific to your business and location, which is exactly what search engines reward.

It helps for tightening and tone, but it cannot verify facts or know your business. Use it to trim, then do the factual and local pass yourself.
